Through discussions with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, DeSantis is exploring using hotels as quarantine and rehabilitation sites for people exposed to the virus.
Tourism and hotels are integral to the state’s economy, and occupancy and room rates have dipped throughout the month of March as more states, including Florida, issue shelter-in-place edicts to citizens. The proposal, in theory, offers an elegant solution by having the federal government provide funds to the state for housing patients that need to be isolated with mild to moderate symptoms in hotels.
